The first President of the Republic of Uzbekistan I.A.Karimov

Islam Abduganiyevich Karimov was born in Samarkand on the 30th January 1938.Islam Karimov, the First President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, led the country from 1989 to 2016.He was the leader thanks to whom Uzbekistan achieved its long-awaited independence, after over 100 years, first as part of Tsar Russia, then as part of the Soviet Union. In March 1990, Islam Karimov was elected as the first President of the Republic by the Uzbek Supreme Council. In August 1991, He declared Uzbekistan as an independent Republic. 

On the 29th December, 1991, Islam Karimov was elected as the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan in nationwide elections. On the 26th March, 1995, following a nationwide referendum, the presidential term was extended until 2000. In 2000, elections were held, and as a result of modifications to the Constitution, Islam Karimov was elected as the President of Uzbekistan for a further seven-year term.

On the 23rd December, 2007, elections were held, with Islam Karimov was elected  as the President of Uzbekistan for a further seven-year term. On the 29th March, 2015, presidential elections were held in Uzbekistan. As a result, and according to modifications to the Constitution, Islam Karimov was elected to the country’s highest office for a five-year term.

The First President, great son of the Uzbek nation and founder of Uzbekistan’s independence, Islam Karimov passed away on the 2nd September, 2016 at the age of 78, after a serious illness.
